& we bumped into the the one & only Ali Trass
(Apparently Ali stands in for no photos for anyone….Chief was on massive charm offensive )
The Traas family had been growing fruit in Holland since the 1800’s, but because it was difficult to find new land there for fruit-growing, Willem(Ali’s late husband )and Ali decided to make a move to Ireland in the 60’s & they opened a shop at the farm in the early 1970’s.
It is the same barn that they use to this day to sell most of what they produce from 40 acres of fruit which has been continued & progressed along by Ali’s son Con.(I would need another post to talk about Con & the great stuff this dude does)
As a result we are the fortunate recipients of these guys passion & it’s this fruit Apples that go into South Tipp. General every Monday Morning picked up by the brilliant Lorna & her TY students of Gael Scoile Clonmel .
In its essences its giving the hospital the best local ,natural ,GENUINELY healthy food.
It doesn’t have to be complex .
I’m sure…actually I know there are an abundance of passionate local fruit producers in close proximity to every hospital in Ireland who care passionately about how food is produced & consumed .
Sticking green “healthy labels “on Coke Zero ,Diet Coke ,Nutri grain bars,Kellogg square bars in our hospital vending machines is not the solution to educating & encouraging our nation to improve our eating habits .
Some joined up thinking & inclusion of what’s actually on our hospital door step would make a massive difference to hospital food ,hospital vending machine ,healthy snack options & adding increased momentum to a definite health food movement that’s happening today .
Nourishment NOT Rubbishment
